ENTERY #1

For my open discussion I would like to talk about the smoking ban at Illinois Central College. I believe this is the best thing that the campus could have done! Not just for the smokers but also for the non-smokers. We are all aware that smoking can cause cancer for smokers but even second hand smokers are at risk. Being a non-smoker, I have walked plenty of times in the clouds of smoke, causing me to inhale these toxic fumes, causing my eyes to become irritated. I have had plenty of acquaintances here on the Illinois Central College Campus who are or where smokers. There were times when they wanted to quit smoking and seeing another smoker or walking by the big cloud of smoke would make them desire just one more cigarette. I am not sure if the campus issues tickets for individuals smoking on campus or what the rules are can they smoke in their cars? Even with the smoking ban some smokers still continue to smoke on our campus. I have walk to the Technology Center entrance just to find smokers by the door, getting a last drag before they go in. I believe that the campus should issue tickets to any individual smoking on campus we are all adults here and we should be able to follow rules! The smell of smoke is very offensive to most of us! For example when someone passes gas everyone runs like a bat out of hell, this is what we non-smokers have to do when we encounter smoke. I know when I see smoke coming my way, I hold my breath till I get clear out of the smokes way.

  1. Olivia, I feel your pain and am happy for the ban, too. (I do feel sorry for our smokers, though. It seems like there could be one designated place?) I think, however, that the ban should be better enforced. Everytime I look out my window (over the deck) there are all sorts of sneaky smokes happening.

  2. I am so glad that this was put into place. I was here this summer and when I would walk outside the doors and it would be liking walking into a blanket of smoke. Stephanie is right though we have those sneaky smokers who go on the outside of the building and smoke one. So, I think they need to do just a little bit better on how they regulate this. One other thing I like about this is that the ban has probably helped people quite because the realize walking to get off campus in the cold is not worth the smoke.

  3. sorry to butt in, olivia, but you're still on my blogger list from lit110!
The thing i really don't like about the ban is that it does perpetuate the ostracization of smokers. Being an on-and-off smoker, I can say most smokers are extremely sensitive to this. All the bans seem to validate a typical non-smoker attitude of superiority.
I'm not trying to say smoking is good - we all know it's not. But I think Stephanie's right - there should be a designated place, away from usual traffic (so as not to bother others), where smokers can smoke. Banning smoking doesn't make it go away - there needs to be a constructive way to deal with it.

ok...lol, on a lighter note it's good to semi-participate in a Stephanies class! good luck, olivia!
