POEM: HOMAGE TO MY HIPS BY LUCILLE CLIFTON

these hips are big hips
they need space to
move around in.
they don't fit into little
petty places. these hips
are free hips.
they don't like to be held back.
these hips have never been enslaved,
they go where they want to go
they do what they want to do.
these hips are mighty hips.
these hips are magic hips.
i have know them
to put a spell on a man and
spin him like a top!

The persona of this poem is Lucille Clifton.
The auditor would be me, I am listening to the poem.
Epigraph is the poem she is giving a brief explanation about her hips.
Sensory details denoting specific physical experiences is imagery which is used in this poem, we can mentally visual her hips.
Alliteration is the repetition of the initial consonant sound S.
I would also have to say this kind of a confessional poem. She is talking about her hips and women don't like to about our hips.

  1. What a great poem. Kinda reminds me of slam poetry. I can see someone performing this to a crowd of people. This reminds me of a poem about a woman's hands I read years ago, where she talks about them being crippled and ugly to the outside world, but about all of the functions they have had throughout her lifetime. Both are nice visuals about innocuous parts of our bodies.
